What a joy it is for us to get back to school and the routines associated with this normal part of our lives. The last few weeks have been a real test of all our patience, tolerance and creativity. The other realisation that has been made plain is how lucky we all are. Social distancing and life under level 4 restrictions may have tough moments but living in a country like New Zealand means enjoying pleasures that many around the globe miss out on. Like most of you, my family and I have had more time together than at any other time in recent memory. This has led to lots of family games, walks, and shared meals that involved collaborative planning plus working.
We have also taken advantage of the additional time and spoken to friends and family based overseas. Time zones and other commitments that previously led to limited communications are not an issue as we have been more relaxed, and let’s face it, nowhere else to be. It is these conversations that have led to my conclusion that we live very blessed lives in Aotearoa. We have safe homes, gardens to play in, space in our communities, access to electricity, internet, running water and other resources that many other people do not have. Due to our geographical location and great leaders, our infection rates and hospitalisations are lower than in other countries.
In my prayers, I am now thanking God for my family and the people around me with sincere gratitude. I now see and appreciate how lucky I am! This period has also been an opportunity to worship and connect in novel ways. The Anglican Diocese has made online sermons accessible to all of us. Easter worship this year was different but just as reverent and fulfilling. Our ‘suffering’ is unique in nature but not unlike previous challenges that other people have faced in times gone by. Paul’s letter to the Philippians Chapter 4 is a great reading that reminds us to keep our faith. Chapter 4:13 reads “I can do all this through him who gives me strength”. We all need support and additional strength whatever our circumstances. I am also aware of the struggles, hardships and sadness that some people will experience during this time. May God give us strength and blessings to cope with all challenges.
Please get in touch if you have something going on that you would like some prayer for mannie.marara@trinityschools.nz I will try and get in touch with as many of you as possible during this time.
